~1 n a soldier who fights for any country or group that is willing to pay him (The Emperor hired an army of Saxon mercenaries.) ~2 adj only interested in money, and not caring about whether your actions are right or wrong or about the effect of your actions on other people (It's a purely mercenary relationship, not a friendship.)
